Outstanding Patient Experience Award

Outstanding Patient Experience AwardIllinois Valley Community Hospital has been named a recipient of the 2012 HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™. This distinction ranks IVCH among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide based on an analysis of patient satisfaction data for 3,837 U.S. hospitals by HealthGrades, the leading provider of information to help consumers make informed decisions about doctors and hospitals.

HealthGrades analyzed hospital survey data obtained from April 2010 to March 2011 from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). HealthGrades identified 332 hospitals performing in the top 10 percent in the nation for patient satisfaction based on patient survey information.

“Our goal at IVCH is to provide the best care to every patient, every day, and this recognition from HealthGrades is a credit to the hard work our staff has put in to achieving that goal,” said Tommy Hobbs, IVCH chief executive officer.

Hobbs noted that IVCH was also the recipient of the 2012 NewsTribune Readers’ Choice Award for Most Respected Medical Center in the Illinois Valley area. The hospital was also ranked second in Illinois for patient safety by a leading consumer ratings publication.

For the HealthGrades award, hospitals had to meet bed size, survey-response size and clinical-quality thresholds in order to be eligible. Information on award recipients and the ratings methodology is available, free to the public, at HealthGrades.com.

“This year, HealthGrades paid particular attention to the impact that patient-provider communication has on patient experience,” said Kristin Reed, MPH, HealthGrades vice president of hospital quality programs and author of the study. “For example, we found that 27 percent more patients of the top-performing hospitals reported staff always explained their medications before administering them, compared to hospitals in the bottom 10 percent.”

“Communication is clearly an important factor for patient satisfaction, but it can also be critical to ensuring positive outcomes,” Reed added. “We commend hospitals like Illinois Valley Community Hospital for setting the standard for outstanding patient experience.”
