Cardiac Rehabilitation

Improved heart health, quality of life through a custom designed program

Heart patients can benefit from the cardiac rehabilitation program at IVCH by learning ways to live healthier, longer lives. The program at IVCH is medically supervised and certified.

Who can benefit from cardiac rehab?

Studies indicate cardiac rehab programs benefit heart patients of any age – not only younger patients, but those aged 75 and older as well.

What conditions are improved with cardiac rehab?

According to the American Heart Association, if you've experienced any of the following, you can benefit:

  • Heart attack
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart failure
  • Angina
  • Heart procedures such as balloon angioplasty or an implanted pacemaker
  • Heart surgeries such as a bypass or valve replacement

How long is the cardiac rehab program?

The program may last a few weeks or a few years, although three months is common. There may be limits, however, to what Medicare and health plans cover.

What should patients expect?

A professional rehabilitation team will evaluate your overall health, lifestyle, medical conditions and limitations before designing a program especially for you.

What can patients learn?

  • Work with a nutritionist to set up a heart-healthy eating plan.
  • Review how to exercise safely, possibly using a treadmill, bike, rowing machine, track or weight machines.
  • Study how to control chronic health conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • Determine ways to reduce stress.
  • Learn about your medications and how to take them.
  • Get tips for quitting smoking and losing weight.
  • Receive counseling about returning to work and to activities you enjoy. This can include help for the emotional upheaval that common follows heart problems. Depression, anxiety and anger can affect you physically and keep you from recovering.

What other support can cardiac rehab offer?

Changing behaviors and habits can be difficult. During cardiac rehabilitation, you'll have a team of people whose experience and advice can support and help you achieve your goals. In addition, you'll be closely monitored by trained therapists who can make sure you're responding well.

Also, you'll meet others who've been through a similar life event. That camaraderie can help you stick with your program and make the transition back to an active life.

To find out if you're a candidate for cardiac rehab and to get a referral to our program, talk to your healthcare provider. You will need a physician's order to enter the program.
