A personalized approach to joint replacement

New technology is helping Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Robert J. Mitchell provide a more personalized approach to joint replacement. The Mako Robotic-Arm assisted technology transforms the way joint replacements are performed, combining the skill of an experienced surgeon with the precision of robotics for the best possible patient outcomes.

FAQ About Mako

How does robotic-assisted joint replacement provide a personalized fit?

Before your surgery, a CT-based 3D modeling of your bone anatomy will be made. Dr. Mitchell will use this model to create a personalized surgical plan and identify the implant size, orientation and alignment based on your unique anatomy - all before you ever enter the operating room. During surgery, Dr. Mitchell can make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm. It’s a transformative technology useful for total knee, total hip and partial knee replacements.

How does the Mako system help the surgeon?

Dr. Mitchell is trained and certified in the Mako system. “I am excited about using this new technology for total knee, total hip and partial knee replacements. Mako is changing the way these joint replacement surgeries are performed. Using a virtual 3D model, the Mako system allows me to personalize each of my patients’ surgical plans pre-operatively. I have a clear plan for how I’ll position the implant before I enter the operating room. During the surgery, I can make any necessary adjustments to assure the best possible outcome.”

Is the new joint replacement technology more accurate?

The Mako Partial Knee application allows Dr. Mitchell to selectively target only the part of the knee or hip damaged by osteoarthritis, allowing him to resurface the diseased portion of the joint while helping to spare the healthy bone and ligaments surrounding it.

How are partial knee replacements done with the Mako?

The Mako Partial Knee application is a treatment option designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis that has not yet progressed to all three compartments of the knee. Following the personalized pre-operative plan, Dr. Mitchell guides the robotic-arm during bone preparation to execute the pre-determined surgical plan and to position the implant. Studies have shown robotic-arm assisted partial knee replacement is two to three times more accurate than manual partial knee replacement procedures.

How are total knee and hip replacements done with the Mako?

As in all Mako joint replacement surgeries, a CT scan will be used to create a 3D model of your affected joint, allowing the creation of a personalized pre-operative plan. Dr. Mitchell will guide the robotic-arm during bone preparation to execute the pre-determined surgical plan and to position the implant, making any adjustments needed during the surgery with the help of the Mako technology.
